Pink manta ray
biodiverisdad

The photo of a pink manta ray has gone viral. Diving instructor Ryan Jeffery first observed this individual in 2015. Onlly the belly is pink, the back is blackish, the typical coloration of a Manta

Kristian Laine managed to photograph it this year near the Great Australian Barrier Reef.

Melisa Cristina Marquez explains that the coloration is not due to an infection, but it’s a unique expression of the melanin of the skin. The dark back of the manta rays is due to the presence of melaninia, and some specimens even have a dark belly, while others are just pink.
