What is the marine wildlife of Cabrera?

In Cabrera there's more life under the sea than on the surface!

Nowadays, it is increasingly difficult to preserve a sea bed as spectacular as that of Cabrera, but its remoteness from the urban centre, the scarcity of rain and the minimal pollution of its waters make them very transparent and preserve the protected species. In fact, the water is so crystalline that we can see from the surface the undulating masses of Posidonia to perfection.

That's why in this post we're going to help you get a little idea about the great biodiversity of marine life on Cabrera that you can get to see if you venture into snorkeling or just put on some diving goggles and go for a dip.

About 85% of the surface of the Cabrera National Park is sea. The absolute clarity of its waters produces a luminosity that allows the existence of underwater vegetation at greater depths and therefore the survival of animals that live among the algae.

We can affirm, in a way, that in Cabrera there is more life under the sea than on the surface!

And with a depth of 118 meters, the marine fauna of Cabrera moves without restraint and reproduces, resulting in more than 500 species, made up of 200 fish, 113 species of bryozoans, 22 of molluscs, 25 of crustaceans, and 87 of sponges. The rocky floors of this National Park also offer much diversity, providing the fauna with shelter and food. In these bottoms we can find big groupers: scorpion fishes, moray eels, octopuses, etc. There is also a great variety of invertebrate species: winkles, stars, sea acorns, crabs, sea urchins, etc. On these rocky bottoms also grow algae such as the calcareous that form the support of the coral and acetabularia (shaped like an umbrella). We have talked about endemic species that are rarely seen in other environments, but what we all know and are used to seeing on the island of Cabrera are the dolphins. On the boat trip to the island and once there, we manage to see different species of dolphins such as the bottlenose dolphin, common dolphin and striped dolphin. These species also coexist with other large animals such as the loggerhead turtle.

When we arrive at the island, just diving into the water we are welcomed by large schools of gregarious fish that surround us, such as castanets, salpas, bream or oblades. And if we fix our sight on the sea bed we can delight in large shoals of both soft and hard coral that we are sure we cannot see one on any other sea bed.

This is all we can tell about the marine fauna of Cabrera. Due to the perfect conservation of the species in this ecosystem it is possible that there is much more fauna than we have mentioned. In fact, it is part of the charm of Cabrera, something like the treasures it has hidden under its waters.

In that case, it's a matter of discovering it and seeing it with your own eyes while you dive in the crystal-clear waters of this little paradise in the Balearic Islands. Believe us, it's worth experiencing such an approach to nature, try it and tell us about it!
